Woven Bamboo Shades Soften a Japandi Living Room

I took a bright but somewhat empty and formal living room and transformed it into a warm, welcoming space that feels both polished and lived-in.

The original room had a very symmetrical, almost staged layout—the large sofa sat squarely in the center with matching lamps on either side and a round coffee table floating in the middle. While clean, it lacked personality and felt a bit impersonal.

To bring the room to life, I introduced layers of natural texture and greenery. A tall fiddle-leaf fig now anchors the left side near the French doors, while a small bonsai sits gracefully on a low wooden stool. I replaced the round coffee table with a substantial rectangular one that offers hidden storage and a more grounded presence. The sofa was angled slightly and paired with a round mirror above it to reflect light and add softness to the space.

I also added subtle layers: a woven bamboo shade on the central window for warmth and privacy, sculptural pampas grass in a dark vase, and a beautiful piece of abstract art that brings quiet movement to the wall. The result is a room that still feels open and airy, but now has soul—balanced, comfortable, and ready to be enjoyed every day.
