Description

I took a lovely but somewhat heavy and traditional living room and gave it a fresh, light-filled transformation that feels open, calm, and welcoming.

Before, the space felt a little closed in. Rich brown curtains with thick tassels framed the windows and French doors, while a bold red-and-blue Persian rug dominated the floor. A patterned sofa in gold tones sat beneath a pair of landscape paintings, and darker wood tables added to the weight of the room. Everything was lovely, but the overall feeling was busy and a touch formal.

I lightened the entire room by swapping the heavy curtains for soft, flowing white drapes that let the sunlight pour in. The bold rug was replaced with a large, textured neutral one that grounds the space without competing for attention. I chose a simple, creamy upholstered sofa and added gentle touches of sage green in the pillows to bring in a whisper of color. The dark wood side tables were exchanged for lighter oak pieces, and the coffee table became a clean, round wooden design with a lower shelf for an uncluttered look.

Artwork was removed so the walls could breathe, allowing the beautiful natural light and the view through the French doors to become the main focus. A pair of soft-glow lamps on the side tables now provide a gentle evening ambiance.

The result is a serene, airy room that feels much larger and more peaceful—perfect for relaxing or gathering with family.
