Cozy Plaid Curtains Revive This Americana Living Room

I took this bright, open living room and gave it a warm, welcoming personality with a touch of classic American charm.

The space already had beautiful bones—those tall ceilings, the French doors, and all that natural light—so I focused on layering in character and comfort. I swapped the plain white curtains for a soft plaid in warm neutrals, which instantly makes the room feel cozier and more grounded. The large, neutral rug was replaced with a richly patterned one in soft reds and blues that adds depth and a lively energy underfoot.

On the sofa, I introduced a mix of pillows in patriotic tones—stripes and flag motifs—that bring personality without feeling overwhelming. The coffee table was restyled with a rustic tray, books, and natural accents to create a lived-in, collected look. To balance the room and add interest, I hung a pair of landscape paintings above the sofa, placed a tall mirror on the right wall to reflect more light, and brought in a leafy potted plant that softens the corner.

The result is a room that still feels open and airy, but now has heart—inviting, timeless, and ready for everyday living.
