Description

As a professional interior designer with a passion for creating serene, inviting spaces, I was thrilled to take on this charming bathroom renovation. The goal was to elevate a functional but somewhat bland room into a cozy, coastal-inspired retreat that feels fresh, welcoming, and effortlessly stylish—without major structural changes. Let me walk you through the transformation, from the "before" to the "after," in a way that's easy to visualize.

In the original setup—the "before"—we had a solid foundation: a classic white bathtub with a simple shower setup, a warm wooden vanity topped with a clean white countertop, a standard toilet, and a rectangular mirror above the sink. The walls were tiled in neutral white subway tiles, the floor was laid with practical gray tiles, and there was a lovely window letting in natural light, framed by an exposed wooden beam on the ceiling that added a rustic touch. A plain white shower curtain and a basic bath mat completed the look. It was practical and clean, but it lacked personality—it felt a bit sterile, like a blank canvas waiting for some warmth and character.

For the "after," I focused on layering in texture, color, and natural elements to infuse a subtle beachy vibe, making the space feel more like a relaxing oasis. Starting with the vanity area, I swapped out the straightforward rectangular mirror for a round, rope-framed one that evokes nautical ropes and seaside charm—it's a simple switch that softens the lines and draws the eye with its organic shape. To bring in some life, I added a lush green plant in a white pot on the countertop, which not only purifies the air but also introduces a pop of nature against the wood tones. A small glass jar for holding essentials like cotton balls adds a touch of everyday elegance.

Moving to the walls, I incorporated subtle decor to create interest without overwhelming the small space. Above the window, I hung a serene landscape print that hints at ocean views, tying into the coastal theme. On the wall near the tub, a pair of woven wall hangings—think natural fiber plates or baskets—add texture and a handmade feel, warming up the white tiles beautifully.

The bathtub area got a refresh too: I replaced the plain white shower curtain with a soft, patterned one featuring gentle floral or abstract designs in soothing blues and whites, which complements the room's light palette while adding a layer of privacy and style. On the floor, I layered in a fringed, striped bath mat in navy and white—it's soft underfoot, absorbs water well, and echoes the nautical stripes for a cohesive look. This replaces the basic mat from before, making the space feel more pulled-together and spa-like.

Overall, these thoughtful updates—mostly affordable accessories and swaps—have transformed the bathroom from utilitarian to utterly inviting. The wooden elements ground the design with warmth, while the whites and blues keep it airy and bright, enhanced by the natural light from the window. It's now a space that feels personal, relaxing, and ready for daily routines or a long soak.
