Description

As a professional interior designer with a passion for breathing new life into historic spaces, I was thrilled to tackle this charming but worn-out living room in what appears to be a vintage home. Let me walk you through the transformation, from its original state to the refreshed haven it is today—I'll keep it simple and straightforward so you can picture every step.

Originally, the room had a lot of character but was showing its age in all the wrong ways. The walls were covered in a bold, green floral wallpaper that felt overwhelming and dated, especially with the peeling ceiling exposing old lath and plaster above. The furniture was a mismatched collection: a faded pinkish sofa with vibrant green pillows that clashed a bit, a patterned armchair that had seen better days, and assorted wooden pieces like a small side table and a desk cluttered with odds and ends. Sheer curtains let in light but added to the faded, eclectic vibe, and the overall space felt dim, cluttered, and in need of some TLC to honor its historic bones without losing its warmth.

My goal was to create a cozy, modern farmhouse-inspired retreat that blends the home's original charm—like those beautiful wooden doors and transom window—with fresh, inviting elements. We wanted it to feel light, airy, and functional for everyday living, while nodding to timeless style.

First, we stripped away the old wallpaper and repaired the damaged ceiling, then installed crisp white vertical shiplap paneling on the walls for a clean, textured backdrop that brightens the room without overpowering it. This instantly lifted the space, making it feel larger and more serene. We kept the original wood trim and door for that authentic touch, refinishing them to highlight their rich grain.

For the furniture, we swapped out the outdated sofa for a sleek, light gray one with plush cushions—perfect for lounging. I added a mix of throw pillows in neutral patterns like stripes and checks to bring in subtle texture and comfort without the chaos of the old greens. The armchair got an upgrade to a swiveling blue velvet piece, draped with a soft throw for those cozy evenings, and we introduced a rustic wooden coffee table with clean lines to anchor the seating area. Underfoot, a neutral geometric rug ties everything together, adding warmth and defining the space on the refinished hardwood floors.

To infuse personality and light, we curated a gallery wall with black-and-white framed prints and botanical sketches, plus a round mirror that bounces natural light around the room. A tall black floor lamp provides focused reading light, and we brought in some greenery with a potted plant on a slim side table for that fresh, organic feel. Sheer linen curtains now frame the window, softening the sunlight while keeping things private.

The result? This room has gone from tired and cluttered to a welcoming, stylish oasis that's equal parts relaxed and refined. It's now a spot where you can curl up with a book, host friends, or just unwind—proof that a thoughtful refresh can honor the past while embracing the present. If you'd like tips on replicating this look or tweaking it for your own space, I'm all ears!
